Distinguished and Famous people from Prahran

🖼️ Peter Booth

Peter Booth taught painting at Prahran Technical College from 1966 to 1969, shortly after graduating from the National Gallery School. His stark architectural paintings gained attention through The Field exhibition in 1968. Later work moved into unsettling figures and landscapes informed by dreams, reading and imagination. Growing up in industrial Sheffield and studying in Melbourne gave him markedly different visual environments to draw upon. Prahran belongs to the teaching phase of that career, when an emerging artist was also helping students develop their own work. The classroom association predates the powerful dream imagery that later made his paintings immediately recognisable.

🎨 Howard Arkley

Howard Arkley began a three-year art course at Prahran College of Advanced Education in 1969. Lecturer Fred Cress introduced him to the airbrush, which became a defining tool in his work. Its smooth, sprayed lines helped him transform suburban houses, decorative patterns and everyday surroundings into vividly coloured images. Books and reproductions also shaped how he understood art, making the appearance of printed pictures an influence in its own right. Prahran’s connection is the training and experimentation behind that recognisable style. A technique often associated with commercial illustration became, in his hands, a way to look afresh at familiar suburbs.

🎨 Sidney Nolan

Sidney Nolan studied at Prahran Technical College, where design-and-crafts training included lettering and drawing for dressmakers and milliners. Commercial work followed, including glass signs and advertising layouts, and he became interested in the possibilities of gloss and spray enamels. Those practical materials remained relevant to his later art, long after the Ned Kelly paintings made his name internationally familiar. Prahran’s connection is part of his actual training. The biography complicates the image of a wholly untutored painter: commercial design and experiments with everyday paints helped supply the tools of his artistic development.
